A meteor on Wall Street

| December 30th, 2008

Agree or disagree with James Howard Kunstler (I sometimes do and sometimes don’t), you have to love the way he writes. From this week’s Clusterfuck Nation:

The American banking sector imploded spectacularly to the degree that investment banking actually went extinct — as if a meteor landed on the corner of Madison Avenue and 51st Street.

Rebooting America

| December 27th, 2008

Thomas Friedman visits my home town of Hong Kong and on his way back, realises that America needs a reboot. Money quote:

“Landing at Kennedy Airport from Hong Kong was, as I’ve argued before, like going from the Jetsons to the Flintstones.”

There is much to disagree with in his piece. No, innovation in places like Hong Kong doesn’t come at a cost to civil liberties. No, it doesn’t come with higher tax dollars.

In Hong Kong, as in other Asian hothouses, efficiency is a mark of pride.
